Walking out to a point off the Big Sur Highway I looked down the coastline and was inspired by the visual contrasts I saw: Sunlit sands below dark fog-capped hills, quiet pastoral headlands dropping to ragged bluffs, and raging surf reduced to lapping waves in the quiet inlet. The bold foreground shadow gave rise to the title.
