One of my favorite streams
in the “High Country” is the Lyell Fork of the Tuolumne
River. It has inspired at least two dozen of my paintings.
My practice is usually to hike up a couple of miles, where the boulders
are as big as houses. In “Down the Lyell Fork", however, I
didn't even go beyond the campground. I strolled out onto
the popular flat sunbathing rocks and looked back. I could
see down to the confluence with the Dana Fork creating the genesis
of the famed Tuolumne River. The contrast of the turbulence in the
channel with the quiet reflections over the flat rocks caught my
eye. It was fun balancing these ephemeral qualities into one unified
whole.
