At the eastern end of the
Tuolumne Meadows is the bald granite dome that invites campers of
all ages to climb its face to the summit. From my vantage point
for this painting, on the Lyell Fork of the Tuolumne River, the seduction
to scale the heights of Lembert Dome is clear. The pitch deceptively
increases from flat to steep for all would-be rock climbers. We
realized at about the halfway point, that to proceed further up
could be life threatening. The next day we joined a ranger led troop
that took us to the top. The back side has a long and winding
trail that finally got us to the windswept summit. It was an awe
inspiring bird's eye view of the serene meadow below, surrounded
by the craggy peaks of Yosemite's picturesque high country. It was
the quiet water flowing at the base of this massive landmark that
moved me to the point of making another painting.
