I
used the same promontory when painting “Point Lobos”.
In that piece I was interested to balance the fractured distant point
with the rounded boulders in the foreground. In this new work, the
challenge was to set the old point off against the bare boney Monterey
pines. It has been fun to send the eye all the way back to the horizon
in these new paintings. This degree of visual depth was impossible
in the intimate scenes of the High Sierra mountains.
